2016 JX Forum - Sunday OCT 9th

The Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX) rewards and encourages swimmers who achieve a high standard of swimming excellence. The 2016 JX Forum, held on Sunday 9th October at MSAC was a success. Thank you to the EDA swimmers and parents who attended, I'm sure it was a very informative day for all.

Gary Barclay, swimming expert and top selling author of 'Swimming for Parents' and 'Behind the Goggles', did a great job hosting the session.

Guest speakers included an Olympic coach, and Olympic swimmers who all recently arrived home from Rio.

Talking of their experiences were Craig Jackson - Mac Horton's Coach; Josh Beaver - 100m & 200m backstroker and Koti Ngawati - 200m IM.

Both swimmers spoke about their journey from their 'learn to swim' days to now being Olympic swimmers. Their journey's were filled with both positive emotions and many disappointments, including injuries, setbacks and missing out on making a team by 0.02 of a second. It's tough and a lot of swimmers can relate.

Key messages:
☛ develop and build RESILIENCE
☛ IT'S ONLY A BAD RACE IF YOU DON'T LEARN FROM IT
☛ there is no losing it's WIN OR I LEARN
☛ focus on the PROCESS, not the end result

Due to limited time and space, Gold award winners were treated to a 1 hour pool session with Craig Jackson and a 1 hour practical physio session conducted by PhysioHealth. Swimmers were given a spiky ball and shown how to use it to loosen up those very tight muscles.

In the meantime, parents were invited to attend a Nutritional session with Sports Nutritionist and Dietitian, Helen Duong. Helen's focus is Nutrition for Performance. She provided a fundamental understanding and importance of all food groups together with food guidelines, meal plans and recipes to boost performance.

It was an excellent day filled with information and practical advice. Very highly recommended.
